Raw Herbs Traditionally, raw herbs are combined into formulas

The number herbs used in Oriental Medicine has steadily increased during the past two thousand years, as substances were incorporated from both China's folk medicine and other parts of the world. Each herb has particular properties, such as taste and temperature, and targets specific organ systems. Taste determines its therapeutic function (Acrid herbs disperse and move; Sweet herbs tonify; Bitter herbs dry and drain; Sour herbs astringe and prevent or reverse abnormal leakage of fluids and energy; Salty herbs purge and soften; Bland herbs leach out damp and promote urination). The inherent temperature of a herb (hot, warm, neutral, cool and cold) determines its clinical application: hot diseases require the use of cooling herbs and cold diseases require the use of warming herbs. Once a diagnosis has been made the strategy of treatment, the formula that incorporates that strategy, and the specific herbs that constitute that formula will naturally follow.

Chinese Herbal Medicine is used in conjunction with acupuncture or massage to:

  • Support and nourish the body by replenishing those aspects that are deficient or weak;
  • Clear disease pathogens by inducing sweating;
  • Drain down such as with laxative herbs;
  • Harmonise or regulate the function of different organ systems;
  • Warm the interior or clear heat from the interior;
  • Reduce accumulations and stagnations.

Tania has a dispensary of approximately 200 individual Chinese Herbal granules that she uses to create formulae specifically tailored to each individual's condition and that are easily modified as your condition changes and improves. These formulae are effective, non addictive and are easy and convenient to use for both adults and children. For acute conditions the herbs may be taken three or more times per day for up to one week, more chronic conditions may require the herbs to be taken twice per day for a longer period.

Food is a more gentle form of medicine than herbal supplements but can still greatly influence the progress of treatment. Improper eating habits can worsen one's condition, however, with so many conflicting ideas about what constitutes a healthy diet it is often easy to become confused about what one should or shouldn't eat. Tania offers Whole Food Counselling and Dietary Advice based upon the understanding of the nature of food (warming and cooling foods, moistening and drying foods, etc) and its application to your constitution and current condition.
